There is no doubt that SharePoint has had a huge impact on the ECM market. It is seen as affordable, usable, and easily deployed. And yet we hear as many horror stories about its implementation as successes. Uncontrolled growth of SharePoint sites, critical information that's hard to find or duplicated, high true cost of enterprise deployment. These are all complaints that users, business owners and system administrators have heard or made.
Deploying a SharePoint based system is just like any other Enterprise Content Management system. The same considerations around information architecture, change management, and technical design apply. Failing to address these increases the risk of, and almost guarantee’s, expensive rework at best and project failure at worst.

In addition we utilise this capability to develop and support our own products on both platforms, such as the Bulk Data Managerand Permissions Manager, and to develop and support business critical .NET based applications for key clients such as Melbourne Water.
Consider this scenario. You’ve seen the glossy brochure. You’ve saved up and finally splashed out on a swimming pool for home. After months of milestone deliverables, the builder proudly announces it’s finished! The family races home from work and school, changes into swimwear and government approved floatation devices, and heads outside to dive on in.
But the builder didn’t fill the pool with any content; water, toys, or rubber duckies. That was left to you to complete post-delivery. To contain the children’s wails of anguish, what do you do? The same process you have always followed – simply bundled them into the car and headed down to the local community pool.
The filling of the pool at home is added to a ‘to do’ list, but something always comes up. You decide it’s more financially viable to fill in the pool and buy an annual pass to the community pool, forgetting all the benefits that encouraged you to get your own in the first place.
Conversely there is often a desire to “just put what we have into the system and clean it up later”. Our experience has proven that choosing this approach is a poor decision. The effort to ‘clean-up” a badly migrated document set is far greater than migrating a clean set of documents. It’s a bit like putting muddy water in you pool and hope that the filter will clean it up.
To realise the full value of the document management system it needs to have clean documents to manage. Don’t be left with an empty or muddy pool.
